Placing menstrual health at the heart of human rights in Africa

Kitambaa allies itself with terrain that is familiar to her: that of defending human rights and social justice, at the heart of her daily commitment to menstrual health.

On 10 September, Kitambaa participated in the strategic meeting between the President of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) and organisations engaged on human rights issues, in preparation for the Commission's forthcoming session (Dakar, 12–21 October 2026).

We had the honour of delivering a key message there: menstrual precarity is not merely a health or private matter, it is an issue of social justice and human rights.

Education: a girl who misses school due to lack of sanitary protection sees her right to education violated.
Economic opportunities: a woman hindered in her work or entrepreneurial activity sees her right to economic opportunities and autonomy compromised.

Health: without decent infrastructure, the right to dignity is hindered.

Environment: without ecological management of menstrual waste, it is also the right to a healthy environment that is at stake.

By giving voice to the field, Kitambaa reaffirms its commitment to co-constructing sustainable solutions with continental bodies, so that menstrual health becomes a recognised pillar of equality in the African Charter.
