VISION & MISSION

A data-driven approach.

In Africa, and particularly in Senegal, women and girls face enormous difficulties during their periods. According to statistics published by the Ministry of National Education in 2013.

  • More than half of primary schools lacked sanitation facilities. 52% of schools had no toilets, and 59% had no access to water.
  • 40% of girls aged 9 to 17 missed school at least once a week whenever they had their period, due to a lack of sanitation infrastructure.
  • This absenteeism negatively affects academic performance. In some cases, girls (11.2%) drop out of school because of the challenges they face during their periods..
  • Women lose 40–45% of their income during these five days..

Our approach

Kitambaa aims to provide low-income families with washable sanitary pads at highly competitive prices, to replace disposable sanitary pads and help address the challenge of keeping young girls in school and empowering women.
